Misha Pinnington (She/Her)
Misha is a female artistic director, co-producer and founder of an award-winning film and theatre production group, which generates and delivers fem queer projects and platforms for both female identifying and non-binary voices. These projects aim to respectfully and ethically explore issues and nuances including gender, race, sexuality and environmental awareness, and to express these ideas in innovative ways. She has recently wrapped as a junior director on a documentary series for Sky Arts, and aims to pursue more experience in documentaries, in order to have the skills to offer a platform for other people to tell their stories in a way that does justice to them and their message. What is it that encourages the emotional and psychological investment of an audience, and how can that investment be sustained without compromising the authenticity of the story? How should we do justice to the people and events we represent in our films? These questions are the foundation of the work that Misha is interested in. Misha holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Oxford, and this love and appreciation for words and their power is a big part of her work. As a queer female of Chinese, Indonesian, English and Irish heritage, she is interested in stories about finding strength, community and humour outside of the perceived ‘norm’. She is obsessed with social veneers, because they allow us to ‘fit in’ and she is drawn to projects that reveal our – usually concealed – inner anxieties. After a lot of self-reflection and time in hermit-mode (!) Misha is thankfully no longer chasing the idea of fulfillment as a destination, but is instead finding wonder at – and gratitude with – the journey of life and permanently learning.
